ASP FAQ Tutorials :: 8000XXXX Errors :: Why do I get 80040E23 errors?

Why do I get 80040E23 errors?

You may see these errors when using ADODB.Recordset to update data:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e23'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]Invalid cursor position; no keyset defined

or

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e23'
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Cursor operation conflict

Use an UPDATE statement to affect data already in the database. Do not use an ADODB.Recordset and rs.update methodology and loop through rows, updating them one-by-one. See Article #2191 for more information.

In addition, if you are opening firehose recordsets (read only, forward only), you can get the above errors if you try to use MoveFirst(), MovePrevious(), AbsolutePosition, etc. Not sure why you would need to traverse a recordset in both directions within a single ASP page, but if this is a requirement, consider using GetRows() — see Article #2467 for more information.

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e23'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access 97 Driver] Record is too large.

This can occur if you are using ADODB.Recordset to update a large record, for example one with many columns of the MEMO datatype. Again, like above, use an UPDATE statement. If you exceed Access' limitation of a SQL statement (64 kb), break the statement up into multiple UPDATE statements.

And of course, please stop using ODBC. See Article #2126 for more reliable connection strings.
